Dr. Oddgeir Tveiten

A senior scholar in the Department of Global Development and Planning at the University of Agder, Norway, where he currently leads academic work at the intersection of media, communication technologies, and societal transformation. His present research explores how evolving media landscapes and digital communication tools shape public discourse, education, and democratic engagement, calling for renewed dialogue across academic disciplines.

For over two decades, Tveiten has also been actively involved in building higher education capacities in East Africa, particularly through the development of journalism and communication programs. Among his most enduring contributions is the co-founding of the Future Learning Lab at the University of Agder in 2010—a networking arena for media-rich learning and interdisciplinary dialogue. Under his leadership, the Lab became an institutional research group in 2013 and continues to host the annual World Learning Summit, which has grown into a globally recognized platform attracting participants from over 40 countries.

Tveiten has long-standing roots in journalism and media theory. He was one of the founding members of Norsk Medietidsskrift, now a leading Nordic journal in media studies. In parallel, he co-initiated several editorial platforms, including Treffpunkt and Alternative Futures Magazine in Oslo. At the University of Agder, he played a central role in launching the MA program in Social Communication and has worked to consolidate a PhD program in his department. He is also engaged in developing an MA in Journalism in Uganda, and previously contributed to establishing a similar program in Ethiopia.

His academic journey includes prior appointments as an associate professor at the University of Bergen, as a research associate at the University of Oslo and the Norwegian Research Council, and as the R&D director at Arkivet – a Peace Documentation Center in Kristiansand. Internationally, he has held visiting scholar positions at Stanford University (2008–2009, 2014–2015), UC Berkeley, and the University of Iceland.

Tveiten is a frequent peer reviewer for international academic journals and serves on the editorial board of Conflict and Communication Online. He has led numerous Nordic-funded research projects, including Nordic Edupreneurship (2012–2014) and the Nordic EdTech Network (2016–2017), both supported by the Nordic Innovation Center.

Earlier in his career, he coordinated media research projects related to post-conflict integration and propaganda studies, including Nordic initiatives examining journalism in the aftermath of the Yugoslav wars. From 1984 to 1988, he was a Fulbright Scholar at the University of Minnesota’s School of Journalism and Mass Communication, where he also co-edited the Minnesota Daily student newspaper.
